The collection is presented by location and can be explored by a keyword search using the panel above, or by the inventories which can be browsed below. For further explanation as to how inventory information is represented online, please read the introductory texts to the Van der Doort inventory and Sale inventory.
An artwork may have up to three sections: current knowledge, information from the Van der Doort inventory and also from the Sale inventory. Searching will pick up any reference across the entire site – multiple results may therefore refer to the same painting if it featured in both inventories and we have been able to trace it in the present day.
Each entry also includes an image of the work where possible, as well as the relevant page from the Walpole Society transcriptions of the original inventories. Note that WS stands for Walpole Society page number. Learn more about the sources.
