Orazio Gentileschi
An Allegory of Peace and the Arts
This is may be Orazio's (now-lost) ceiling for Somerset House––not the Queen's House, Greenwich. Note that we are illustrating the central portion of the Queen's House, Greenwich, ceiling to give an idea of its appearance. There is also a possibility that the work here inventoried is Orazio's large Apollo and the Nine Muses (280 x 260 cm, previously in New York), whose location is now unknown, on which see Ward Bissell, Orazio Gentileschi and the Poetic Tradition in Caravaggesque Painting, 1981, pp. 190-191.
